Newborn Reflexes

A newborn's nervous system is not fully developed and therefore, they rely on a set of innate unconditioned responses, or reflexes, to survive. These reflexes are present at birth and do not require any learning or experience. They are triggered by specific stimuli and help the newborn to adapt to their new environment.

1. Rooting Reflex

The rooting reflex is triggered when the newborn's cheek is touched. The newborn will turn their head towards the stimulus and open their mouth to search for food. This reflex helps the newborn to find the breast or bottle and to latch on to it.

2. Sucking Reflex

The sucking reflex is triggered when something is placed in the newborn's mouth. The newborn will suck on the object and swallow the contents. This reflex helps the newborn to get nourishment and to bond with their mother.

3. Swallowing Reflex

The swallowing reflex is triggered when the newborn's tongue or throat is touched. The newborn will swallow the contents of their mouth. This reflex helps the newborn to get nourishment and to clear their airway.

4. Gag Reflex

The gag reflex is triggered when something touches the back of the newborn's throat. The newborn will gag and expel the contents of their mouth. This reflex helps to protect the newborn from choking.

5. Moro Reflex

The Moro reflex is triggered when the newborn is startled by a sudden noise or movement. The newborn will extend their arms and legs out to the sides and then bring them back together again. This reflex helps to protect the newborn from falling.

6. Tonic Neck Reflex

The tonic neck reflex is triggered when the newborn's head is turned to one side. The newborn will extend the arm on the side that their head is turned towards and flex the arm on the other side. This reflex helps the newborn to maintain their balance and to reach for objects.

7. Palmar Grasp Reflex

The palmar grasp reflex is triggered when something touches the newborn's palm. The newborn will grasp the object tightly. This reflex helps the newborn to hold onto their mother or other objects.

8. Plantar Grasp Reflex

The plantar grasp reflex is triggered when something touches the newborn's sole. The newborn will curl their toes down and grasp the object. This reflex helps the newborn to hold onto their mother or other objects.

9. Stepping Reflex

The stepping reflex is triggered when the newborn is held upright with their feet on a flat surface. The newborn will make stepping movements with their legs. This reflex helps the newborn to learn to walk.

10. Babinski Reflex

The Babinski reflex is triggered when the sole of the newborn's foot is stroked. The newborn's toes will fan out and their big toe will dorsiflex. This reflex helps to check the newborn's nervous system.

11. Crawling Reflex

The crawling reflex is triggered when the newborn is placed on their stomach. The newborn will make crawling movements with their arms and legs. This reflex helps the newborn to learn to crawl.

12. Swimming Reflex

The swimming reflex is triggered when the newborn is placed in water. The newborn will make swimming movements with their arms and legs. This reflex helps the newborn to stay afloat.
